LifeWay has continued to sell the NIV despite the resolution to remove it; the translation remains the most popular among Southern Baptists with a 40 percent share. The rationale behind the rebuke was two-fold. First, inclusive translations abolish many gender-specific terms. Some scholars defend translation decisions like these, arguing they most clearly express the meaning of each passage. But the SBC disagrees, seeing such translations as part of a larger cultural push to erase distinctions between genders and diminish masculinity.

It believes political correctness is threatening the integrity of its holy scripture. In response to this perceived menace, the SBC commissioned its own Bible translation, the Holman Christian Standard Bible, which was finalized in The gender-neutralizing pattern is also present in its translation of the Old Testament.

The Southern Baptist Convention, however, left the Alliance in over the issues of homosexuality and women in the clergy. The Baptist church believes in Baptism only after a person has professed Christ as their Savior. The Baptism symbolizes the cleansing of sins. Some churches use a sprinkling of water as Baptism, but most practice full immersion , where the candidate is fully immersed in water.

Baptism is not a requirement for salvation and many churches do not subscribe to infant baptism Instead, Baptism in the Baptist church is a public expression of faith. Since the origins of the church, Baptists have said the Bible is the only authority for Christian faith and practice. Baptists believe that the Bible is the only authority because it is divinely inspired or has a divine nature. The Holy Spirit inspired the Bible and empowered men to record the truth about God and give directives on how to apply the Bible to the Christian life.

Some Baptist churches may disagree on certain practices, but many say the Bible is their sole authority. Often considered a major division in the Protestant church is Calvinism vs. Calvinism is named after John Calvin, a theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation.

The major tenant of Calvinism is predestination , where some people are predestined to be saved. That is, God decided the destiny of some with salvation by grace. Others are meant for damnation due to their original sin. In Arminianism, named after Jacobus Arminius, the teachings say that God has chosen us to bring salvation to all and people have the ability to make the decision for faith.

Even within Calvinism and Arminianism in the Baptist church, there are differing beliefs and many conversations about it. The Southern Baptist Convention itself has held many conferences centering on the long-standing Protestant debate. Communion is not necessary for salvation. It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Is there is a list of which translations of the Bible are accepted by the Southern Baptist Convention?

The Southern Baptist Convention, while the highest authority within the Southern Baptist church, is not technically an authority amongst Baptists. It functions as a voluntary association with which member churches may choose to associate, but cannot dictate terms to anyone. While it does approve changes to the " Baptist Faith and Message ," these are to be taken as guidelines not at odds with the local autonomy of the church.

Within the Baptist Faith and Message the closest thing Baptists have to a creed , it simply says:. The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter.

Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried.

All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation. That said, I suspect the question wants to know what translations are preferred. Here, any major translation would suffice, I propose the following list to help you figure out which ones are most likely:.

Most words are, of course, made up of vowels and consonants. The distinction between these stems from the way the letters are spoken. A vowel a , e , i, o , and u in English is a spoken sound made with the mouth open and without the tongue touching the roof of the mouth, teeth, etc.

A consonant is a spoken sound made by completely or partially blocking the flow of air breathed out through the mouth. All the other letters are consonants, though y can be regarded as either a vowel or a consonant , depending upon how it is pronounced in different words.

The answer is slightly different depending on what you consider a word. There are over entries in OxfordDictionaries. If you exclude initialisms and words with y , there are still a handful of words that are written without a, e, i, o, u, or y:. Pyx : A small container for carrying the Eucharist.

Rhythm s : A recurring movement of sound or speech. Wry : A mocking, biting or sarcastic sort of humor. Xyst s : A long and open portico in a gymnasium. There are two obscure words that use W as their singular vowel, both taken from Welsh.

Since W by itself is worth 4 points in both Scrabble and Words With Friends, these words are pure gold for players in need. They are:. These do exist! Thank that old spelling bee favorite, onomatopoeia. More specifically, thank the remarkable power of the human voice, because even with alternate pronunciations, we can make an awful lot of sounds not summed up by AEIOU, or Y, or W. Onomatopoeias sometimes lack vowels because some vocalizations lack vowel analogues.

A few other oddities also sneak in, ready to help toss unwanted letters and get some As and Es into your hand. Brrr or brr : An expression of being cold. Phpht or pht : Interjection to indicate mild annoyance. Psst : An interjection to attract someone's attention. The only sure rule in English is that English has no sure rules.

Brachycephalic breeds such as the shih tzu that have a shortened skull and a flat snout still have the same sized palate as if they had a longer snout. This means that some of the fleshy part of the palate partially obstructs the entrance to the throat, causing breathing difficulties.

This problem is further exacerbated for the teacup shih tzu with his even shorter skull and flatter snout. Breathing will be particularly labored at times if he also suffers from another common problem, stenotic nares , a constricted opening of the nostrils. The bones that form the skeleton of a shih tzu under 7 pounds 3. If you have adopted your shih tzu from a reputable breeder, then you will already know the state of his general health from the information given to you by the breeder.

However, if you have already bought a very small, 5 pound 2. This way any underlying health issues can be discovered and treated early. Teacup shih tzu are even more sensitive to extremes of temperature than their standard sized counterparts. On hot summer days and during heat waves, avoid taking the dog out during the middle of the day and early afternoon when temperatures are at their peak. Instead, take him out for walks and exercise early in the morning and late in the evening when the air is cooler.

If you live in an extremely hot climate, consider buying a raised bed to allow cooling air to circulate underneath. In cold weather, dress your little one up in a fleece or waterproof jacket and booties when going out for walks.

Place his bed in a warm place away from drafty air currents and provide extra blankets. During the first few months after first adopting your puppy you will probably have to give him much attention to prevent the onset of separation anxiety. Only leave him on his own for very short periods of time at first, then, as he gets used to being on his own, you can gradually increase the amount of time you are away from him. Check out my piece on separation anxiety in the link below:. Teacup shih tzu can and will happily get all of the exercise that they need from running around, perhaps chasing a ball, indoors.

However, they also like to be outdoors and will benefit from two short walks of around 20 to 30 minutes per day. Try to include one short training session on one of these walks. This link takes you to the TrainPetDog website where you will have the opportunity to sign up for a free email shih tzu training course. Children love small dogs and teacup shih tzu generally love playing with children. Be careful at first and supervise the interaction between the dog and the children.

Similarly, if the dog is handled in a way that he feels endangered, he may react badly. So until the children do know how to handle a small dog, be on hand to teach the correct way. A shih tzu below the minimum AKC standard size can never be a show dog so, unless this is the look that you are going for, there is no need to grow the hair down to the floor. This is a style that is time consuming to maintain as it necessitates almost constant brushing throughout the day to prevent knots and mats forming.

Weight can vary, from around eight-and-a-half pounds up to roughly seventeen pounds. All things considered, this is still a very small breed of dog. They have to pump their little legs just to keep up with you, so about fifteen minutes is all the hardcore exercise that a shih tzu needs even when fully matured. Mini shih tzus actually come in at less than half the maximum probably weight of a fully grown shih tzu.

At most, they will be about seven pounds to be classified as a mini or teacup shih tzu. These mini shih tzus can be just six inches tall instead of the standard eight inch minimum. This is still within the acceptable range by the AKC, but there are some stipulations to keep in mind. Some breeders have the best of intentions, and try to produce mini or teacup shih tzus in the safest manner possible. As a general rule, a dog under four pounds has a difficult time surviving. Breeders find smaller shih tzus dogs, and breed them together.

Breeders cannot control the exact, specific outcome, no matter how hard they try. The goal is to make a smaller shih tzu. Teacup and mini shih tzus are around six inches tall, and rarely over seven pounds. Teacups are usually classified as five to seven pounds, and never get over eight inches tall. Shih Tzu dogs are already small, but they are also relaxed, affectionate, and loving. Tiny Dog Popularity With their flowing hair and small size, the Shih Tzu is one of the most recognizable dog breeds.

They are known for their calm, loving nature and unique appearance. The Appeal of the Teacup Shih Tzu Though the Shih Tzu is already quite small itself, there are many reasons why someone might want an even smaller version of this dog.

Secondly, smaller dogs are far more transportable than larger dogs. Thirdly, smaller dogs usually require less exercise and maintenance than larger dogs. Their smaller stature also means that they have less hair to brush. What About Their Appearance? Lastly, many people just find smaller dogs cuter than larger dogs. They tend to look like puppies for longer and initiate our natural caring instincts. Not all small dogs are the same. This method might seem fool-proof, but like the others, it also has its drawbacks.

Mixing with a Smaller Breed This method is one of the easiest and most common ways of creating a teacup Shih Tzu. When you breed two dogs together, they inherit traits from both parents.

What This Means Odds are, the puppy will inherit a mix of traits from both parent breeds. But it will produce a unique mixed puppy that might be smaller than a Shih Tzu. They are prone to a few health problems but are generally healthier than a purebred Shih Tzu.

Their personality might be laid-back and calm, or excitable and reserved. Puppies of this mixed breed can be more excitable and hyper than your average Shih Tzu. Introducing the Dwarfism Gene In many cases, breeders will attempt to make a dog smaller by introducing the dwarfism gene.

However, this is not possible in the Shih Tzu because the breed already has the dwarfism gene. All teacup Shih Tzus are created using one of the other methods. Breeding from Runts This is a reasonably straightforward way to create a teacup-sized version of a dog breed. Do you have a Shih Tzu? Let us know about her in the comments! There are plenty of other small breeds you can consider. It is quite amazing since the dog simply does not exist.

It is ONLY a marketing term. There is no separate variety that is referred to as the Imperial There are no dogs with royal bloodlines. Unfortunately, people see the term used SO much, that many think that it must be a real term, that those dogs must exist It is not true. Either the term is being used indiscriminately Or they pups are being bred to be smaller than nature intended, which is very dangerous for both dam and for all puppies. Purposely breeding for puppies that fall under 5 lbs.

While Mother Nature has the final say and all ethical, loving breeders will sometimes have pups that are smaller than their littermates These very tiny dogs are so fragile and usually have a lifetime of health issues. The life span of these dogs is usually much shorter, as well. Liver shunts can be one of the problems of these dogs that are undersized.

Are These Dogs Healthy? Is it Okay to Purchase One? If a Shih Tzu is unnaturally tiny due from unethical breeding, the dog can have many health issues. If two un-naturally tiny dogs are bred together, this causes the problems. This will cause calcium deficiency. Vital internal organs will be affected. This can cause everything down the road from liver failure to heart disease.

Another species of reptilian megafauna, the Megalania , once roamed Australia, estimated to measure up to seven meters. Evidence exists of this monster coexisting with Komodo dragons, implying that the Komodo dragons are the last of a long lineage of giant monitor lizards. Rising sea levels and urbanization are contributing to the decline of the Indonesian-area species.

What are they and where did they come from? The Komodo dragon, also known as a monitor lizard, is endemic to five Indonesian islands and now appears on the endangered species list due to illegal hunting and a decrease in habitat. Introduction to Komodo Dragons According to Dr. Oh, and Komodo dragon saliva contains a rudimentary venom that reduces blood pressure and increases bleeding.

More than anything, these lizards are prone to lounging. It was early August and the height of the dragon breeding season. And this means that large males the size of crocodiles were engaging in ritual combat where they wrap their forelegs around each other and rise into the air before crashing back down. All of which makes for great footage, of course. Most importantly, Pilley says you should never run from a Komodo dragon. Fortunately, with an expert guide at your side, visiting with the dragons can be done safely, and injuries to tourists are essentially unheard of.

And this can put Komodo dragons at odds with humans, just like lions in Africa or tigers in India. But Achmad Ariefiandy is working to change that. Ariefiandy is an ecologist with an Indonesian nonprofit called the Komodo Survival Program.

Each field season, he and his team trap and implant microchips into as many dragons as possible, providing some of the first data ever recorded about how these lizards spend their days.

These animals exist only in Indonesia, says Ariefiandy. But that might end up being a good thing for the dragons. However, that decision was overturned in September, and the park remained open until Indonesia started to limit international travel in an attempt to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

So it seems the Komodo dragons got their respite after all. Common Name: Komodo dragons. Scientific Name: Varanus komodoensis. Type: Reptiles. Diet: Carnivore. Size: 10 feet. Weight: pounds. Size relative to a 6-ft man:. Least Concern Extinct. Current Population Trend: Unknown. This photo was submitted to Your Shot, our photo community on Instagram. Animals Wild Cities This wild African cat has adapted to life in a big city. Animals This frog mysteriously re-evolved a full set of teeth. While their eyesight and olfactory senses are quite poor, their split, forked tongues can track down their dying victims or carrion over distances of up to 9 km away.

Not only are they cannibalistic, but Komodos are known for eating their own offspring. After the eggs hatch, baby Komodos instinctively climb high up in any trees to avoid being eaten by their mothers or other nearby Komodos. They can remain up in the trees until they are four years old, when they return to the ground and can then live up to 30 years old. Another method for escaping cannibalistic adults, younger Komodos have been found to cover themselves in feces and the intestines of dead animals.

As Komodos rely on their sense of taste and smell, it is an effective way to avoid being eaten. As avid scavengers, Komodo dragons have been known to dig up human graves and feast on the rotting carcasses.

In order to protect the deceased, locals cover the graves of their loved ones with rocks to avoid Komodo tomb raiders. Komodos are parthenogenetic , meaning females are able to conceive without the aid of male sperm.

Instead, their egg cells can fertilize each other, as has occurred with Komodo dragons living in captivity. Interestingly, however, Komodos can also reproduce sexually. Whether they choose to reproduce sexually or asexually depends on the conditions of their environment. They have been recorded swallowing entire goats in one sitting, ramming the carcass up against a tree to aid in swallowing their food.

Despite their size and appetite, however, the metabolism of Komodo dragons is very slow.

An advisory is a regularly scheduled period of time, typically during the school day, when teachers meet with small groups of students for the purpose of advising them on academic, social, or future-planning issues. In some cases, other adults and staff members, such as guidance counselors or social workers, may act as advisors or participate in an advisory program.

Advisories may meet daily, multiple times a week, or only a few times a month. Advisory periods tend to be shorter than a typical class, perhaps as 20 or 30 minutes long, and they are often used as an alternative to more traditional homeroom periods. Advisories are designed to foster stronger adult-student relationships and a stronger sense of belonging and community among students.

Advisory programs are important because they give students time that is specifically designed to help them succeed academically. Exactly how the time is used depends on the specifics of the school, but it is often used to do things like:.

Beyond simply supporting strong academics, this also helps students develop important skills that will help them succeed throughout the rest of their lives: time management, the ability to plan ahead, self-advocacy, and the ability to ask for help when it is needed.

Middle school can be a tricky time for students, both emotionally and socially, as they begin to create their own identity separate from their parents, siblings, and friends. By ensuring that each student has an adult that they are comfortable talking with about these things, a strong advisory program can help students work through common middle school issues like:. The key to success is making sure that the student understands that they can always talk to someone about anything that is bothering them, and that adults are ready to offer support and guidance.

By helping students work through social and emotional problems as they arise, advisory programs naturally help to create a positive and connected school culture. They do this directly by reminding students that they are a part of a community of parents, teachers, administrators, and friends that wants them to succeed, be happy, and be healthy. When students feel validated, understood, and accepted, they naturally develop stewardship for themselves and others.

And they do this indirectly by helping to reduce the stress—whether academic or emotional—that can lead to problems in the first place. By doing so, they can facilitate a level of mutual trust that allows for deep and meaningful communication. Once that open channel for communication exists between students and their advisors, we find that students naturally will seek advice and help when they need it. And advisors, for their part, gain insight into their students that helps them recognize when there are problems that might need to be addressed.

All of this helps to create a proactive safety net and support structure designed to identify issues before they turn into crises.

If a man fled from battle, he would drop his heavy shield to run faster. As such, a man returning with his shield must therefore be victorious, while a dead man could be carried back on his shield. According to Plutarch, this line was actually spoke by numerous Spartan women as the men left for war at Thermopylae. This is another real-life quote, spoken by the Spartan warrior Dienekes. When he was told how Persian archers could quite literally blot out the sun with their arrows, he casually responded with the line about fighting in the shade.

Needless to say, he died at Thermopylae, but thanks to reports of the battle that were later preserved by Herodotus, his words live on to the present. The Spartans may have been the great badasses of ancient Greece, but the reason that a force of three hundred soldiers cold hold off the entire Persian army was that they chose a tight narrow pass where they were protected on both sides by high cliffs, rendering the Persians' superior numbers meaningless.

With these words, Leonidas rallied his men. The Immortals were an elite unit of Persian warriors chosen from their nobility, and the real-life soldiers were much cooler than the silver-masked ninjato-wielding demons with warped faces and pointy teeth seen in the movie. These spear-carrying heavy infantrymen formed a single unit 10, strong—a force so big that if any of them died, he would be immediately replaced by another, making them seem like an immortal army…at least until they encountered the Spartans.

My initial hotel job was with the Fairmont Empress housekeeping department during my first co-op work term, a temporary two-month position after which I returned for my second year of schooling. After graduating from Vancouver Island University, I completed my last co-op semester by working at the Queen Victoria Hotel and Suites as a guest services agent. My employment continued there after my co-op term was complete, and lasted until the hotel was sold in October I left with a wealth of knowledge in guest services.

I worked as a reservations agent for seven months before I was promoted to the position of rooms division coordinator. In this position, I assisted in supervising the department, as well as taking on some marketing responsibilities such as keeping the hotel website up-to-date, social media, print materials, and much, much more.

The role became a jack-of-all-trades position and was a great experience! In fact, I used what I learned in that role to obtain my current position of marketing coordinator.

My advice for students is that any related education will always help get your foot in the door of a hotel. All applicable work experience, skills, and knowledge can also be an advantage. If you are a hard worker, a team player, and willing to help out when other departments need it, you will be successful in any job you do. Students should understand that the hospitality field can be a career. Some people view a job in the hospitality industry as temporary or seasonal employment, but it can be a career with many exciting opportunities if you stick with it.

The great thing about working in a hotel is that there are so many different departments to explore. The options are endless. Networking can provide an advantage in this industry. If you contact your tourism bureau, it can connect you to organizations to help you further your industry network.

Creating great workplace relationships also fosters getting ahead in any industry. Be sure to keep up with new training and volunteering, as that can be a great advantage, and most workplaces encourage it! Though every job will come with its tough days, push past them as there are so many better days ahead! Work hard and it will pay off! She has multiple credentials including a hospitality restaurant management diploma from Douglas College , an Event Marketing Association certificate from BCIT , and a bachelor of tourism management from Capilano University Ana says:.

My love for travel and hospitality were key reasons I took the hospitality restaurant management diploma program at Douglas College. After receiving my diploma, I decided to focus on event marketing and enrolled at BCIT for further training. Students interested in getting into events and or event marketing need to be able to multi-task, be organized, and have a hard work ethic.

Both education and experience are important to work as an event coordinator. You need to know the ins and outs of the industry by working in events, and you also need to understand the back-end strategies of how to implement, organize, and plan events.

The events industry is not your typical nine-to-five job. Long workdays are common, and you can expect to sometimes work 16 or more hours in one day to get the job done. Events can happen any day of the week, at any time.

Commitment and the ability to be flexible is key as you are always the first one on scene and the last one to leave.

You need to have patience, be organized, and be able to deal with stress. Many students expect to be hired at at a high level right after graduation, but in truth, most will be entering the workforce in their respective fields in an entry-level position. My advice is to work hard, learn, and ask questions, and you will succeed. Volunteering or working part time with events is key as you will not only gain valuable industry experience, you will also be networking with your future peers.

Experience is invaluable in our sector, so the more events you work or volunteer in, the more opportunities you will have to expand your network and meet key stakeholders in the event industry.

To be successful, you need to be organized, have excellent communication skills, and be able to handle stress and pressure. Throughout my career, I have needed to make decisions on what was next for me. You never know which job may lead you to where, so treat each job as a stepping stone to move ahead in your career.

Christine is in senior management at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. She graduated from the Douglas College program in hotel and restaurant management in Christine says:. From there, I became very interested in the organization and execution of events, weddings, and conferences.

During my time as a banquet server, I was able to cross train with conference services, allowing me to gain insights into the skills and knowledge required to be a successful member of the that team.

When a position opened up for a conference services coordinator, I was overjoyed to receive a role as part of this fantastic team! Seven years have passed, and I am now in the position of senior conference services manager, taking care of many large groups throughout the year. Event and conference planning is a very interesting blend of roles: being on the floor with clients and groups but also completing many administrative tasks and paperwork to ensure plans are effectively communicated.

A positive attitude, passion for creating outstanding events, and an eye for detail are three key qualities needed. Members of my team have moved here from many other departments, including banquets, front office, sales, and food and beverage; however, having a base of operations experience is the normal pathway to a position in conference services.

Being successful in a conference services role takes passion and an understanding and appreciation for the guest experience. We are ambassadors for our brand to our guests — to 1, guests at a time — and it is important that we ensure each one feels a special connection to our venue and location. A positive attitude, willingness to learn and passion for whatever role you choose will always help you on the road to success. Volunteering is a fantastic way to try out new roles and meet great contacts.

Hands-on experience can be invaluable in the future. Continuing to seek knowledge, through training, education, industry events — whatever method is interesting for you — will also be beneficial. David is the owner and founder of Ridge Wilderness Adventures Ltd. He graduated from the outdoor recreation management program at Capilano University in David says:. I love people and I love being outside, so I searched for positions that would fill that need.

I have worked at canoe rental companies, guiding outfits, first-aid schools, retail shops, construction, and anything else that I could get my hands on. I recommend students get into the field by one of two means: enter a specific program like the one at Capilano University, or contact a company that does the work they would like to do and apply.

If you prefer a set schedule and set pay, it is probably not for you. To succeed in this line of work, attitude and availability trump aptitude. If you would like to have a lucrative career in the outdoors, you need to possess an outgoing, friendly, hardworking attitude. Your ability to work when the work is there is key to success. This industry is all about the people that you know. Go to every event and course you can to meet people and get known.

Most places will give you the training; you need to do the work if your attitude is right, so sort out what you need before you start.

If you love the outdoors, love people, and want to have fun for work, this is what you should do. Cleopatra works as a planner for the City of Vernon. She holds a bachelor of tourism management from Vancouver Island University and completed the urban design certificate at Simon Fraser University in Cleopatra says:.

My first experience in community planning came during my third-year co-op work term as a planning assistant with the District of Ucluelet. I instantly fell in love with the profession: working with local residents, businesses, non-profits, and elected officials to realize a desired future for the community. In my field the desired skill set includes planning, communication, collaboration, facilitation, public speaking, and report writing.

For knowledge, you need planning history and theory, community development, environmental stewardship, marketing, and statistical and research methods. As for education, you want to study planning, geography, urban design, tourism, recreation, history, and law.

Community planning is incredibly challenging and rewarding work. Put simply, your work can have a tremendous impact on the environment and the quality of life for residents in your community.

If you do have back pain, opt for gentler types of yoga, like hatha or Iyengar, rather than more vigorous practices, to avoid injury, Kogon says. Several studies suggest yoga can help reduce known heart disease risk factors , like high blood pressure among those who are hypertensive, according to a review published in in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Regular exercise can help keep joints flexible, muscles toned, and weight under control, which is what people with arthritis need to manage pain.

Yoga can be a great way for people with arthritis to stay active, because the gentle pace of movement can be less stressful than other types of workouts, according to the Arthritis Foundation. So it would make sense that yoga may help with symptoms. Yoga has certainly not been proved as a cure for asthma, but there is some evidence it might help with symptoms.

A review published in in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews that included 15 randomized controlled trials found that yoga was associated with improvements in quality of life and symptom management for people with moderate asthma. Kogon says it makes sense that yoga would help with asthma symptoms because breathing exercises help relax the muscles in different parts of our lungs, which tighten and tense up during an asthma attack.

The loss of muscle function, coordination, and other issues that come with multiple sclerosis can be frustrating, but some research indicates that yoga might help with MS by improving both physical function and mood. Practicing yoga can help with day-to-day functioning by improving balance and muscle alignment, strengthening muscles, and promoting relaxation, which helps with overall stress levels, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Research has found that for people with MS , a regular yoga practice improved flexibility, along with quality of life factors like fatigue, well-being, and energy levels.

Because yoga promotes well-being and helps with stress, many people turn to it after facing trauma or while dealing with difficult events to promote mental wellness. More and better-designed clinical trials are needed to better establish yoga as a tool to help with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD , but the evidence that does exist suggests yoga can help, according to a review published in in the Journal of Clinical Psychology.

Strong muscles do more than look good. They also protect us from conditions like arthritis and back pain , and help prevent falls in elderly people.

And when you build strength through yoga, you balance it with flexibility. If you just went to the gym and lifted weights, you might build strength at the expense of flexibility.

Your head is like a bowling ball—big, round, and heavy. Move it several inches forward, however, and you start to strain those muscles.

And fatigue might not be your only problem. Poor posture can cause back, neck, and other muscle and joint problems. As you slump, your body may compensate by flattening the normal inward curves in your neck and lower back.

This can cause pain and degenerative arthritis of the spine. Each time you practice yoga, you take your joints through their full range of motion. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up.

Without proper sustenance, neglected areas of cartilage can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like worn-out brake pads. Spinal disks—the shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves—crave movement. Long term flexibility is a known benefit of yoga, but one that remains especially relevant for spinal health. Many postures in yoga require that you lift your own weight.

In an unpublished study conducted at California State University, Los Angeles, yoga practice increased bone density in the vertebrae. Yoga gets your blood flowing. More specifically, the relaxation exercises you learn in yoga can help your circulation, especially in your hands and feet.

Yoga also gets more oxygen to your cells, which function better as a result. Twisting poses are thought to wring out venous blood from internal organs and allow oxygenated blood to flow in once the twist is released. Inverted poses, such as Headstand, Adho Mukha Vrksasana Handstand , and Shoulderstand, encourage venous blood from the legs and pelvis to flow back to the heart , where it can be pumped to the lungs to be freshly oxygenated.

This can help if you have swelling in your legs from heart or kidney problems. Yoga also boosts levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues.

And it thins the blood by making platelets less sticky and by cutting the level of clot-promoting proteins in the blood. This can lead to a decrease in heart attacks and strokes since blood clots are often the cause of these killers.

When you contract and stretch muscles, move organs around, and come in and out of yoga postures, you increase the drainage of lymph a viscous fluid rich in immune cells.

This helps the lymphatic system fight infection, destroy cancerous cells, and dispose of the toxic waste products of cellular functioning. When you regularly get your heart rate into the aerobic range, you lower your risk of heart attack and can relieve depr e ssion. While not all yoga is aerobic, if you do it vigorously or take flow or Ashtanga classes, it can boost your heart rate into the aerobic range.

Studies have found that yoga practice lowers the resting heart rate, increases endurance, and can improve your maximum uptake of oxygen during exercise—all reflections of improved aerobic conditioning.

One study found that subjects who were taught only pranayama could do more exercise with less oxygen. Two studies of people with hypertension, published in the British medical journal The Lancet , compared the effects of Savasana Corpse Pose with simply lying on a couch.

After three months, Savasana was associated with a point drop in systolic blood pressure the top number and a point drop in diastolic blood pressure the bottom number—and the higher the initial blood pressure, the bigger the drop. Yoga lowers cortisol levels. Normally, the adrenal glands secrete cortisol in response to an acute crisis, which temporarily boosts immune function.

If your cortisol levels stay high even after the crisis, they can compromise the immune system. We serve personalized stories based on the selected city OK. Go to TOI. The Times of India. Mindful eating , also known as intuitive eating, is a concept that encourages being present in the moment while eating.

This practice has been shown to promote healthy eating habits that help control blood sugar, increase weight loss and treat disordered eating behaviors 40 , 41 , Because yoga places a similar emphasis on mindfulness, some studies show that it could be used to encourage healthy eating behaviors.

One study incorporated yoga into an outpatient eating disorder treatment program with 54 patients, finding that yoga helped reduce both eating disorder symptoms and preoccupation with food Another small study looked at how yoga affected symptoms of binge eating disorder, a disorder characterized by compulsive overeating and a feeling of loss of control.

Yoga was found to cause a decrease in episodes of binge eating, an increase in physical activity and a small decrease in weight For those with and without disordered eating behaviors, practicing mindfulness through yoga can aid in the development of healthy eating habits.

Summary: Yoga encourages mindfulness, which may be used to help promote mindful eating and healthy eating habits. In addition to improving flexibility, yoga is a great addition to an exercise routine for its strength-building benefits. In fact, there are specific poses in yoga that are designed to increase strength and build muscle. In one study, 79 adults performed 24 cycles of sun salutations — a series of foundational poses often used as a warm-up — six days a week for 24 weeks.

They experienced a significant increase in upper body strength, endurance and weight loss. Women had a decrease in body fat percentage, as well A study had similar findings, showing that 12 weeks of practice led to improvements in endurance, strength and flexibility in participants Based on these findings, practicing yoga can be an effective way to boost strength and endurance, especially when used in combination with a regular exercise routine.

Summary: Some studies show that yoga can cause an increase in strength, endurance and flexibility. Incorporating it into your routine can help enhance your health, increase strength and flexibility and reduce symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety.
