Act 1, scene 1 Saturninus and Bassianus, sons of the deceased Emperor of Rome, challenge each other for the title of emperor.
In the woods, Aaron is burying a store of gold, when Tamora finds him. She learns of plots he has made to kill Bassianus and frame Titus' sons for the murder. They capture Lavinia for themselves. Saturninus concludes that Titus' sons have murdered Bassianus for the gold.
They cut off her hands and her tongue, so that she cannot testify against them. Vengeance is in my heart, death in my hand, Blood and revenge are hammering in my head. In Rome, Titus begs for the lives of his sons who have been accused of murdering Bassianus. But he is ignored. Aaron offers a reprieve for the accused sons if one of the family will send his severed hand to the emperor as a ransom. Titus cuts off his own hand, but in exchange he receives not his sons' freedom but their heads instead.
He also receives his rejected hand. Titus hovers on the edge of madness as he considers the injustices done to his family. Then he discovers who raped Lavinia and severed her tongue and hands.
She uses her stump hands to turn the pages of a book to the story of ravished Philomel. When Saturninus calls for them to be brought out, Titus replies that they are already present, in the dishes from which Tamora has already eaten. With this revelation he stabs the empress. The emperor kills Titus. Lucius kills the emperor.
Marcus and another nobleman possibly Aemilius, depending on the edition of the play are grieved by the state to which Rome has fallen. Lucius speaks up to defend his actions by citing all the crimes that have been committed against the Andronici. Marcus asks the judgment of the Roman people, saying that he and Lucius will give up their lives if they are judged to be in the wrong.
