Why use chalkboards

Chalkboard instruction assists classroom management because it requires light. Sometimes, students are more willing to engage in a classroom setting if they believe what they are learning has real value.

Students that see teachers construct diagrams on a chalkboard witness the process of turning written information into visual information.

Teachers should emphasize the importance of this skill and its potential applications. Writing information on a chalkboard helps teachers take visible cues from students. Teaching with chalk is especially an advantage for teachers of students with mixed learning abilities. A teacher of students with various learning needs must have flexibility within her teaching style. Content written in chalk can be supplemented with additional information or altered without hassle.

Whiteboards provide a more modern, contemporary look within a classroom, and offer the benefits of being able to be used as a projector surface. The lack of dust and reliance on whiteboard markers meant that using a whiteboard made for a much cleaner classroom back then.

For starters, chalkboard writing provides a striking contrast between the black or green background and the bright white or coloured chalk. This makes it very visually appealing for those reading, more approachable for students, and very helpful for those who are visual learners.

Secondly, chalk can easily be erased and cleaned, where whiteboard writing can linger and may require a solvent to properly remove residue. Where erasing chalk used to create a lot of dust in the past, dust-free chalk is now widely available. Thirdly, chalkboards are tactile in nature. Writing with chalk feels more like a pen or pencil when writing. For this reason, many educators prefer writing with chalk versus whiteboard markers. Using chalk to make an emphasis on a word or symbol in a class also helps to engage students.

Chalkboards today offer a variety of modern features, like a range of colours, sizes and dust-free chalk. Jul 1, 24, 1, It's the chalk dust in the air that gives you the big brain GPU designing mojo. Reactions: Kaido and pete Red Squirrel No Lifer.

May 24, 60, 9, www. Chalk dust is bad for computers, and computers are bad for the brain. It's to discourage use of computers and to make people listen more in class. Seriously though, I always found chalk boards were fairly standard, except in any room that has computers they would use white boards.

The dust is actually the reasoning I remember hearing. Reactions: ultimatebob and pete Nov 30, 55, 4, We always had chalkboards, but I'm old. Reactions: Meghan54 , snoopy , jman19 and 1 other person. SamQuint Golden Member. Dec 6, 1, 44 All those major universities have been around for nearly years. Imagine how many classrooms each has. Most of those chalkboards are built into the walls. So you would have to spend a ton of money to remodel all those walls to hang whiteboards.

Plus chalk is dirt cheap as well.
